Front page designs

The following are basic examples of 1A work I have done while at the Democrat and Chronicle. The paper has a very specific style for the cover - six story starts and a set number of refers to the web. The following are some of my favorite examples of how that set-up can work to make a cohesive, attractive cover.

1A and jump page, April 14, 2008 - Water for Sundan
This was a centerpiece story about a local Lost Boy of Sudan, Salva Dut, who goes back to the country to install wells in villages there. Our local AP reporter went with Dut and shot the photos and wrote this amazing story. Because the art is so stark and beautiful, I asked if I could do a special treatment for the package and it was approved. This is the result.

1A, February 4, 2008 - Super Bowl Sunday
This centerpiece was done on deadline and the photos were switched out at the last minute because of the Giants' upset over the Patriots. It gave me a chance to break out of the box for a change on the cover.
